Ok, this is what I'm doing in Chemistry right now. We are creating labs for the 6th graders. I thought it was pretty cool, so I am sharing them with you.
Chemistry Labs for 6th Grade
The Flaming Dollar Lab
70mL ethanol (C2H5OH)
30mL water (H2O)
Copper Chloride (CuCl)
The dollar bill was Soaked in a solution of ethanol, water, and copper Chloride until it was completely soaked. It was then Taken out and lit on fire. The dollar bill broke out into a green flame for a few seconds, and then went out. The dollar itself was not burned. This is because the ethanol and the copper chloride were burning. The flame was green because of the copper Chloride. The dollar bill was unharmed.
The Fire Starter Lab
Spoonful of yeast
30mL hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2)
The yeast and hydrogen peroxide were poured into the flask. The stopper was put in to keep the reaction contained. The flask was stirred to keep the reaction going. The splint was lit on fire, then blown out. The stopper was removed and the stick placed over the flask. The yeast and hydrogen peroxide lit the stick on fire again.
The Whistling Flask lab (barking flask)
2 small pieces of zinc (Zn)
3m hydrochloric acid (HCl)
The zinc and the hydrochloric acid were poured into the flask. The stopper was put in the opening to contain the reaction. The stick was lit on fire. The stopper was removed and the flame was put over the flask. As Oxygen rushed in to start the hydrochloric acid on fire, it made a high pitched sound, sort of like a bark.
The pressure Lab
The pressure lab is just like the Whistling flask lab, except that a stopper with two holes in it was used. The stopper was not removed. When the flame was held over the stopper, the fire went into the hole and the stopper shot into the air.
